Kai is one of the most all-around talented contestants on the show and definitely one of the most talented individuals I've ever met. I first was graced with his talent at the 8th grade talent show at Moore Middle School where his band, "Not Quite Off White" (because they were a few members shy of their full-time band, Off White), played a cover of a Weezer (I think) song. Kai sang and did guitar and of course all the girls swooned. As I got to know him, it was apparent that he was not only musically talented; he had a gift for making people laugh. His impersonation of one of our 8th grade substitute teachers, Mr. Oprey, was hilarious and he eventually banned me from asking him to do it!
I think it was in 9th grade that I first saw Off White, the band that he and his older brother, Ryan, started. their small demo tape included my favorite song, Kato Kaitlin ("he looks like the lion from wizard of oz, but that doesn't bother Kato because...").
In the 9th grade talent show, he performed a duet of that song by Jewel with his girlfriend, Kara. It was sickeningly cute and they did a great job. You know "you were meant for me, and I was meant for you."
After that, I didn't interact much with Kai. Always saw him around but didn't really keep in touch. The minute I saw him audition on American Idol I jumped up and called my Mom (she always liked him lol). I'm so glad he's still in. If he can stay healthy, I'm pretty sure he'll keep impressing America!

And I will pray for Kai and his Mom. I'm not surprised he would devote his youthful life to her. That's the kind of guy he is ;)

Wow. I never thought I would really get to say "remember your fourth grade teacher" when I always say to my students....When you get famous...remember your fourth grade teacher." Kai was an exceptional student then and I see he has created quite a life for himself. Congrats!

I went to high school with Kai in Redlands, Ca. He was always super talented, down to earth, sweet, and, obviously, attractive. I'll never forget he and Ryan singing "In the Jungle." Good job on getting recognized for your talents Kai!

I posted this already on another site, but I can literally 'SEE' Kai's personality on A.I...That he's such a good guy...With the way he takes care of his mother! Not only is he obviously very good looking, but So AWESOME! I was diagnosed with a seizure disorder back in 1985, at the age of 13, althought they are controlled, still to this day, I have fears of them returning...But only a love like Kai shows his mother can help you through! Good luck Kai!
PS--Wish there were more single men like you around our area here in Pittsburgh, PA :) :(

Wow! Kai Kalama! My husband was his sunday school teacher and we also have an audio tape of "Let's Bowl" or "Bowling with Off White." I also remember the Kato Kaelin song. Very cool.
We always dug your name, Kai. You even inspired the naming of our fourth baby, "Kainoa." Kai, your mom really knew how to lead the church choir. She even fed my hubby (Marc Murdock) Christmas dinner (I was in the hospital with a Christmas born baby)
I can't believe how fun it is to see you! Way to Go!
