Ruben Studdard and Frenchie Davis to Star in Ain't Misbehavin Revival

Reportedly, Richard Maltby, Jr., who wrote and staged the original 1978 production, will direct the tour, as well. The original Broadway production made a star out of its leading lady, the late Nell Carter.

The musical won Tonys for Best Musical, Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Carter) and Best Direction of a Musical (Maltby, Jr.). The national tour is scheduled for 2008-09, although specific dates have yet to be announced.

Frenchie Davis Stars on Broadway

Frenchie Davis was hesitant when she was offered the title role in Mahalia: A Gospel Musical because, as she said: "Well, Mahalia Jackson is a legend."

It's true.

Frenchie Davis Pic Mention Ms. Jackson's name, and there's a reverent hush in respect for the woman who brought gospel music to a wide audience beginning in the 1930s and continuing until her death in 1972 at 60.  Jackson's inspirational singing and spiritual presence was also an iconic part of the civil rights movement.

In late spring, Davis was winding down her run in the Broadway musical Rent and was considering a range of options – not the least of which was a long vacation after playing eight shows a week for four years.

"My grandmother loves Mahalia, and she cried when I told her that they offered me the role. She said to me, 'If you don't take that role, I'm going to slap you.'"

Besides Rent, Davis appeared in off-Broadway's Monica! The Musical and played Effie (the role made famous by Jennifer Hudson) in a national tour of Dreamgirls. But to many people, she's best remembered as the powerhouse singer who was an audience favorite in the second season of TV's American Idol.

Davis has mixed feelings about her Idol fame. She won some notoriety – and support – following her disqualification in 2003 after topless photos of her appeared on the Internet. She says she had been upfront about that part of her past when she was selected, only to be disqualified as "inappropriate" later in the season.

(In season six, racy pictures of Antonella Barba surfaced on the Internet. She remained on the show but was voted off before the field narrowed to 12 contestants.)

"After what I can only describe as a double standard, I can't even pretend to be OK with them [American Idol producers] anymore," Davis says. "I'm done being diplomatic about my experience with the show."

She says she doesn't watch the show any longer, distressed about the number of people who have been humiliated by the process and how winners are chosen.

"Every time someone calls me Frenchie Davis from American Idol, I cringe," she says. "I think there's more than enough to me now to [stop putting] that after my name."

That goes for other former Idol contestants who have found success in Broadway shows or films based on Broadway musicals.

In New York, Fantasia is starring in Broadway's The Color Purple, Tamyra Gray was featured in Bombay Dreams, and Constantine Maroulis is in The Wedding Singer.

American Idol Protest Planned to Support Frenchie Davis, Show Double Standard

What: Rally on the American Idol Meltdown/ The Double Standard

Who: Civil Rights Activist Najee Ali,Celebrities and Community leaders

When: Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at 11:00AM

Where: The Kodak Theater, 6801 Hollywood Boulevard., LA CA (Hollywood/Highland)

Civil rights activist Najee Ali, celebrities, community leaders and Chris Tian & Friends will protest on behalf of Frenchie Davis (pictured) tomorrow night. They plan to confront American Idol this Tuesday, claiming a double standard exists.

With the recent headlines regarding explicit Antonella Barba photos being brought to focus through news outlets and on talk programs nationwide, a celebrity rally on Tuesday will examine the issue of a double standard as it relates to the Fox-TV program's treatment of Barba and Davis.

Frenchie Davis Tuesday's planned rally/press conference is scheduled to be held at 11 a.m. in front of the American Idol home: the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.

Four years ago, Frenchie was dismissed from the show for purported racy photos. But those pics - which Davis said were never seen by the Idol powers that be or the public - were of the singer simply modeling lingerie. The ones of Antonella, of course, are of the hardcore porn variety. They're also everywhere on the Web.

(But Barba also did not pose for them for public viewing purposes.)

Ali, who is known for opinionated take current issues, will be joined at the rally by Season One American Idol Producer Tarvenia Jones, Davis (by phone), and Belinda Foster, manager of Davis.

American Idols On Broadway: Making the Grade

It's no secret that America's most popular show has spawned its share of successes... and those who have faded from the limelight pretty quickly.

A number of contestants, however, have surfaced on Broadway in recent months. How are our American Idol favorites doing? EW takes a look:

No, You Da Man, Constantine!

CONSTANTINE MAROULIS
SHOW: The Wedding Singer
GRADE: B+

Despite having won over millions from the beginning, Constantine Maroulis did not enter The Wedding Singer with much optimism from theater insiders.

But in this bizarre college-theater production masquerading as a big-ticket Broadway show, Constantine stood out as one of the top three things on stage. (He comes in right behind the woman playing Robbie's psycho ex-girlfriend Linda and the plane on a stick that appears in Act 2.)

Turns out everyone's favorite Greek rocker spent a summer as an apprentice at the Williamstown Theater Festival, and actually has a degree in musical theater from the Boston Conservatory of Music. A degree!

So it shouldn't be surprised to discover that, in his role as Robbie's bass player and best friend Sammy, Maroulis exhibits terrific comedic timing, not-terribly-awkward dance skills, and a New Jersey accent that's both convincing and consistent.

Audience members might be surprised, however, at how rarely Maroulis is the center of the show -- Sammy's sidekick status has not been elevated to compensate for the Idol vet's relative fame, and he's got but one big number, "Single," a boys'-night-out anthem in which he must concede spotlight space to chorus members.

Maroulis may have lost out to Carrie Underwood on American Idol, but the kid is a natural Broadway baby and he looks like he's having fun... imagine what he could do when not forced to sport a mullet.
