Elliott Yamin Album Sales Set Record

With his debut album, American Idol second runner-up Elliott Yamin broke the soundscan record for the highest selling debut ever on an independent label.

Yamin's record sold over 90,000 copies in its first week. To put this in perspective, he sold about 20,000 more than Kellie Pickler did during her first week, and about 15k fewer than runner-up Katharine McPhee.

An Elliott Yamin Album Review

Ken Barnes writes an American Idol blog for USA Today. Below, he's reviewed the debut album from Elliott Yamin, track by track:

Movin' On: The single is a decent lite soul number that his singing elevates. Would sound fine on the radio, if radio is inclined to play it.

2. Wait for You: One of the strongest tunes on the record, definitely a pick.

Elliott Yamin Photo 3. Find a Way: First cloud on the horizon, dull soul-pop without a memorable melody, although it does pick up midway through.

4. One Word: A ballad whose chorus is the most distinctive and pleasant portion of the song; otherwise on the forgettable side.

5. You Are the One: On the pop side, and a pretty nice example of same.

6. I'm the Man: A little more tempo, a little more R&B, though still on the pop side, and again, kind of pretty.

7. Train Wreck: Very adeptly sung soul ballad.

8. Free: Sounded just OK until the catchy little chorus kicked in. Good stuff.

9. Alright: Elliott funks things up, toughening his vocal effectively. Too bad the song's not up to much.

10. Take My Breath Away: Not the Berlin hit (whew) - pop with a flavor of old-school soul and a nice tune.

11. A Song for You: Elderly readers will recall the Leon Russell/Donny Hathaway song is not one of my favorites, but this version of what's become one of Elliott's signature songs is well executed and will please the fans.

Barnes says it doesn't have the promotional muscle albums from Taylor, Katharine, Chris and Kellie Pickler had - but Elliott can feel proud artistically of his first effort.

A Hairy Situation: Elliot Yamin vs. Sanjaya Malakar

Here's good news for Elliot Yamin: his debut CD hits stores this week. Fans can pick up a copy across the country.

Here's bad news: The American Idol contestant from last season is beginning to look a lot like Sanjaya Malakar.

Although with the number of times he's been in the news lately, along with the number of votes he's been receiving on Idol this year, maybe that's not such a bad thing after all.

Either way, take a look at the two crooners below. While Jordin Sparks continues to impress judges on stage with her vocal talents - and Haley Scarnato attracts votes with certain other traits - these two lovable also-rans can still steal a heart or two ...

Elliott Yamin Single Review

A major fan of Elliott Yamin at Entertainment Weekly has previewed his latest single, "Movin' On." Here's the review:

Thankfully, Elliott's in great voice on lead single "Movin' On," a kiss-off to a fickle lover that could just as easily be interpreted as a message to all those major-label execs who failed to snatch him up after his third-place finish on American Idol's fifth season.

The song's got a '70s, smooth-jazzy vibe that vaguely reminds me of "Just the Two of Us," but I don't think it would be totally out of place on today's pop radio, either. All in all, a very wise choice.

American Idol Song, CD Updates: Bucky and Elliot

  • Bucky Covington debuts this week at No. 57 on Billboard's Country Tracks chart with his first single, "A Different World."
  • Elliot Yamin will be released his first CD through an independent label on March 20. It will preceded by a single, "Movin' On," set for air play on February 13.

It's safe to assume hopefuls from last night's auditions in Memphis, such as Sundance Head, hope to enjoy such endeavors in the future.

Elliott Yamin Likes Holiday Movies

We're guessing that Elliott Yamin likes his new teeth.

According to People magazine, the American Idol fianlist also says "holiday movies" get him in a festive mood. As for his DVD collection, Yamin says National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation always makes him cheery.

Elliott Yamin: A Great Voice ... and Now a Great Smile

Elliott YaminWe already knew that Elliott Yamin had a great voice.

Now, thanks to the fame he earned on American Idol, the singer has a great, new look as well.

On the show, Yamin mentioned that diabetes had rotted his teeth and he was left with a crooked smile as he belted out tunes that most fans gobbled up (just not enough to have him defeat eventual winner, Taylor Hicks).

"The next thing you know I got offers from dentists all over the country to fix my teeth for free," Elliott said.

And so it's been done. Yamin, who has just landed a new publishing deal with Sony, has many things to smile about in life. Including shiny new, beautiful teeth!

American Idol Picture of the Day: Bringing the Heat

Say, is that Greg Maddux out there in that Braves uniform, ready to deliver a baffling curveball and befuddle a batter? Actually, no. Maddux now pitches for Los Angeles.

Below is none other than our man Elliott Yamin, throwing out the first pitch for his hometown Richmond Braves, Atlanta's minor league affiliate.

Elliott Yamin Brings It

We're not sure if he threw a strike, but we don't imagine he did. After all, American Idol is not a pitching competition. He is standing pretty close to the plate, however. Is that legal?
