The next edition of American Idol may not start until January, but the FOX juggernaut is already making news.

Several changes are in the works, officials told The New York Post, including:

• Changing the format to allow singers to show other musical talents, such as guitar playing;
• Many fewer "mentors," those established musical stars like Diana Ross and Tony Bennett, who appeared every week last season and took attention away from the contestants;
• And, next summer, the annual American Idol live tour may be combined with the So You Think You Can Dance tour, in order to create a show with both singing and dancing.

We can't wait to watch it all.

It's a good week to be one of the talents who did NOT win American Idol.

First, Jennifer Hudson won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress Sunday night. It was a signal to hopefuls everywhere that simply being on the show can do wonders for your career.

Now, it's been announced that a finalist from last season will appear Thursday night. Following in the footsteps of Fantasia from a week ago, look for Kellie Pickler to perform during the American Idol results show this Thursday.

We can't wait.

American Idol Worship has learned from reliable sources that Jennifer Lopez has been scheduled perform on the show on April 11.

J. Lo joins a long line of big time acts to take the American Idol stage over the years, including Prince, Mary J. Blige, Rascal Flatts, Shakira and more.

With the competition down to the final 24 contestants, four more (two men, two women) will be voted off tomorrow night by the fans.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, Michael Jackson shot down rumors that he would perform on the Idol stage this year.

"There is absolutely no truth to the rumor that Michael Jackson is going to appear on 'American Idol,'" Jackson's rep Raymone Bain said.

This is just a rumor ... but what a rumor it is!

Sources are putting together various reports to determine if Michael Jackson will appear on American Idol later this season.

Realitytvmagazine.com reports that "several signs" point to the possibility that Jackson will have his own Idol theme-week, and might even "mentor" the impressionable young talent on the show.

Why all the Jackson buzz?

First of all, American Idol producers have hinted for weeks at a "big event show" during this season. Also, reports have swirled that Jackson has turned to Idol creator Simon Fuller to help revive his sagging career, perhaps involving a comeback show in Las Vegas.

Finally, in a recent conference call, executive producer Nigel Lythgoe explained the show's impenetrable wall of silence around contestants, and used Jackson as an example, saying they wouldn't want it to "slip out with somebody telling their mom that Michael Jackson is coming."

Would a savvy operator like Lythgoe really let such a big scoop just slip? Reps for the show had no comment. A rep for Michael Jackson could not immediately be reached.

Remember that these American Idol spoilers must be taken as mere rumor at this point.

While we've heard that hopefuls such as Paul Kim and Brandon Rogers are moving on to the top 24, nothing is confirmed yet.

But can you really imagine Jordin Sparks being sent home any time soon? Neither can we. That's why we feel confident posting the following American Idol photos of these future finalists ...
