David Cook Album: Selling Well

Might some consider American Idol finalist David Cook a ringer?

The talented ringer's self-released 2006 album, "Analog Heart,” was the No. 1 downloaded album all weekend on Amazon’s MP3 service. It even beat Mariah Carey’s "E=MC2."

D. Cook

So, do you think this gives Cook an unfair advantage over David Archuleta and the rest of the American Idol contestants?

I, in fact, do think this gives David C. an unfair advantage of winning the Idol crown this year. I mean, the guy has tons of albums released on Walmart, iTunes, and Amazon from his past projects, such as Axium, MWK, etc, and more and more people are purchasing these albums. In a way, it's a good thing (for him, anyway). But it's also a bad thing. American Idol is all about undiscovered talent. Right now, the only ones who seem to fit that category are Syesha Mercado, David Archuleta, and Jason Castro. That should be our Top 3, with Archuleta being the winner, but I have a bad feeling that people will be casting out their votes to Cook. I agree with all of you - he's an amazing guitar player and singer. He's the total package. But he's already had his turn as a musician with a record deal. It won't happen, but I'm hoping he won't make the Top 3.

Well, I so disagree with the comment left before me. As far as undiscovered talent, I never heard of David Cook before American Idol. The only advantage he has over the other contestants is that he is more talented. We are all entitled to our own opinion. I like all the contestants that are still in it, but this is not a popularity contest, who's the cutest, or who is known more than the others. IT'S A SINGING COMPETION. The best singer is supposed to win. That's American Idol

The only advantage he has over the other contestants is that he is a better singer. We are all entitled to our own opinion. Time for some real facts:

First of all, David Cook is NOT a friend of Chris Daughtry's, nor has he ever claimed to be.
Secondly, that album (Analog Heart) was released in 2006.  Not by even an Indie label, but by David Cook himself.
The AI rules state that no contestant can be under current contract.  David Cook has never been under ANY record label contract.

As stated in the original article,"That’s a first: an album out from an "Idol" contestant before the contest has concluded."
Check your facts.  Both of Taylor Hick's albums were available for sale while he was still a contestant on Idol.

Every contestant left (or just recently eliminated) on the current season of American Idol has had some kind of exposure, be it national, regional, or local.  Carly, Michael, Kristy, and Brooke had all put out albums prior to AI.  David Archuletta had national TV exposure by appearing on Star Search.  Syesha appeared on an ABC TV series in 2006 called "The One - Making A Music Star."  Also in 2006,  Jason was on an MTV series called "Cheyenne".  And then we have David Cook who played in local bands in the KC and Tulsa area.

    Hmmmmmmm...so who's the ringer?

By the way, Carly's,Brooke's, Michael's, and Kristy's pre-Idol CDs are also available for sale right now on amazon.com.
    They just aren't out-selling Mariah.

    Well said Jo!

  6. ms Says:

I dont think anything the contestants did or tried to do before american idol matters at all. They have obviously not "made it" yet in the music industry and thats what this show is all about.
David A. has been singing in front of people for years and was on star search, should that eliminate him. Alot of former AI contestants have had some kind of exposure to the business and there's been very little said about them. I think the talent level this year is really high and it's throwing some people a bit. Several seasons have been boring as hell, not this year. I think it's great.

  7. Bobby Says:

Well...I don't think it gives him an unfair advantage. I'm not a Dave C. fan at all, but I do say good for him. Take full advantage of your exposure on your own...before someone own's him in a contract.

It's not my style of music AT ALL...that low, moaning "I gotta take a dump" vocal range. It's been done MANY times before...Nirvanna, Creed, Pearl Jam...etc, etc. There is NOTHING origninal or unique about his "style". So for those of you talking about this being a singing contest and not a popularity one...check yourselves...cuz popularity (and sympathy) is ALL that is keeping David C in this. True singers have range and can sing more than just 3 notes...with that same screaming note at the end of EVERY one of his songs (which all sound the same).

  8. AUDRY Says:

The fact of the matter is he is an accomplish musician and only revealed in the AI interview that he works as a bartender. It was revealed that he made a record and the band won awards and stuff. I thought he was a wanna be idol to fulfill his dream. He already making it and album selling like hotcake and be in competition at the same time. It's a joke.

  9. John Says:

American Idol claims that they have the best talent this year and its no doubt when you chose accomplished singers you will end up with top talent. This year is more about capitalizing on singers that have pre-existing fan bases. So it is truly unfair and ridiculous to believe this show is a true talent show. The voting was already skewed before the show started. Why not let any established artist compete and face the criticism of Simon? The answer is simple: it would make the judges look like fools. I do not want to belittle David Cook but he needs to understand he is like the college student that has the answers to an upcoming exam because he got them from his local fraternity friends. He knows winning the competition will not be based how hard he worked to compete. Let's be honest about this if anyone really can.

  10. Linda Says:

David Cook's advantage is his experience. From years of singing with a band, making an album and growing up singing in musicals as he stated on the show last week. Most of the contestants have their own version of that but on a much more limited scale. Jason has the most raw, undiscovered talent since he grew up playing the drums and not as a singer. Personnally, I agree with the comment from Bobby above - yelling is not singing. The first AI cd I'm going to buy is Jason Castro's. He sings from the heart and it is not as staged and calculated as the two David's. I downloaded all of his studio songs and love listening to them. Don't hold the fact that he happens to be cute against him! Go Jason.

  11. Liz Says:

Well first of all, I just want to say that I think David Cook is so hot!!!!plus he can sing too...Another I hope that he do win American Idol.I really think he can make it as an artist.Cause if he does win(which I know he will), I am going to wait an get his album. I really love how he can turn a pop song into a rock song(I am into the rock theme, myself).

  12. mare Says:

David Cook is the most talented idol EVER to grace the American Idol stage other than Kelly Clarkson. He is an unknow talent you idiots. Kelly Clarkson won awards, other contestants have had CD's out, it is no different. The thing here is that David Cook is so talented and in demand that people want to hear any kind of music he did...His CD Analog Heart has received excellent reviews. It has at least 5 to 6 radio friendly hits that you would hear on radio.

So stop complaining and thank god that American Idol discovered such an amazing talent as David Cook.

This guy is a brillant writer and arranger of music. Enjoy him!

  13. Gretchen Says:

David Cook (sigh) did not have a "record deal". He put out Analog Heart himself, unlike Carly and KLC, who did have record deals. Get your facts straight before you post. David Cook is by far the most talented person on AI. I think the producers were not expecting him and are a little frazzled that he is TOTALLY showing up their little trophy boy, Archuletta. I'm not worried, I know the best MAN will win! Go DC!

  14. Jan Says:

Thanks for letting me know that David Cook has an album for sale on Amazon.com. He is so very talented. I can hardly wait to get the CD. Hearing him sing Eleanor Rigby, First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, and Hallelujah just gives me thrills and chills! What a singer! What star quality!
    What a great guy!

  15. Kirsi Says:

i think he is the best and who cares if
he has an album out i've never heard of it
and neither has anyother people so who really
    gives

  16. michelle Says:

Thanks people for informing me of his CDs on sale yay!!!! David Cook should win!!!! He is so hot!!! David A.s so boring....

  17. Appalonia Says:

I am so happy that David Cook won. He deserved it. He has a great voice and will sing great songs and make awesome albums. So get over it who ever didnt think he shouldnt have won it.

  18. jeike Says:

I love DAVID COOK!!!! not only does his voice move me but his face is so expressive.... i cried with him when he won!

  19. celeste-jo Says:

This is the most exciting American Idol season since. David Cook is the boldest artist to ever have joined this contest, making risks and pulling it off very well. He has the range and the talent, and deserves to win hands down. It is so gratifying to see real talent recognized. Kudos!!!
